I wanted to share this article I found regarding some facts about Mardi Gras. It is only appropriate that Mardi Gras is happening a week after the Super Bowl--therefore New Orleans has most likely been celebrating for a week already, tomorrow's Mardi Gras will just be a continuation of the party. There is a parade schedule in order to make sure you do not miss an event. The history of Mardi Gras can me traced to the Romans, a French-Canadian explorer, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville, founded a plot of land 60 miles South of New Orleans and names it the Pointe due Mardi Gras--he also founded "Fort Louis de la Louisiane" now Mobile, Alabama--which held the first Mardi Gras. There a secret society Masque de la Mobile, similar to Mardi Gras Krewes, and Boeuf Graf Society and paraded down the streets on Fat Tuesday. The parade and floats in New Orleans did not start until the 1740s, and presently there are many Krewes that are formed from private social clubs, who fund their own floats and organizations, therefore New Orleans calls Mardi Gras "the Greatest Free Show on Earth!" Remember Mardi Gras 2010 is tomorrow, February 16th!! Consuela E.
